Why Chrome opens the wrong profile on a Mac, and how to fix it

Chrome on a Mac opens the profile you used last, and links you click in other apps go to the Chrome window you used most recently. So if you were last in your personal profile, a link from work Slack opens there. You can fix it three ways: have Chrome show the profile picker at startup, use a link router that sends links to the profile you choose, or switch profiles with per-profile Dock icons so the right one is always one click away.

Why it happens

Chrome has no idea which account a link “belongs” to. It follows two simple rules:

1. At launch, it opens the profile that was used last.
2. For links from other apps, such as Mail, Slack or a PDF, it opens the link in the most recently used Chrome window. Whatever profile that window is in, the link lands there.

On top of that, the macOS Dock shows one icon for Chrome no matter how many profiles you use. Clicking it brings forward whichever window was in front last. Nothing on screen tells you which profile you are about to get.

Fix 1: show the profile picker at startup

Chrome can ask which profile to use each time it starts, instead of quietly reopening the last one.

1. Open the profile picker from the profile (avatar) button at the top right, or from the Profiles menu in the menu bar. ⌘⇧M opens the profile menu from the keyboard.
2. In the profile picker window, turn on the Show on startup option.

Now every time Chrome launches, you choose the profile. This helps with the “wrong profile at launch” problem. It does not change where links from other apps go while Chrome is already running.

Fix 2: use a link router

A link router becomes your default browser and decides where each link opens. Some ask you each time, others follow rules, such as “links from Slack go to the Work profile” or “links to this domain go to this profile”. Common choices on a Mac:

• Velja
• Choosy
• Finicky, free and open source, set up with a config file
• Browserosaurus, free and open source

Fix 3: per-profile Dock icons

Much of the “wrong profile” pain is really a switching problem. You clicked Chrome in the Dock expecting work, and got personal. Or you used the avatar menu and got a new window instead of the one you had.

Chrome Profile Switcher gives each profile with an open window its own Dock icon, with the profile’s picture and a small browser badge. Click the Work icon and your existing Work windows come forward, even on another desktop or display. Click again to cycle through them. Hover to see that profile’s windows and jump to one.

This also helps with links. Since Chrome sends a link to the most recently used window, clicking your Work icon first makes a Work window the most recent one, so the next link you click lands there.

The app reads window titles through the macOS Accessibility API. When you have more than one profile, Chrome adds the profile name to the end of each title, and the app matches that against Chrome’s profile list. There is no copy of Chrome and no extension. It is a free beta for macOS 14 or later, and it also supports Brave, Edge, Vivaldi, Chromium, Yandex, Firefox, Zen, LibreWolf and Waterfox.

Which fix should you use?

• Chrome opens the wrong profile when it starts: turn on the startup profile picker.
• Links from Mail, Slack or other apps land in the wrong profile: use a link router, or make the right profile’s window the most recent one before you click.
• You keep landing in the wrong window when switching: use per-profile Dock icons.

Many people combine two: a link router for links, and Dock icons for switching.

Tips to avoid mix-ups

• Give profiles clear names and pictures. It makes the picker, the avatar and any Dock icon easy to read. If you use Chrome Profile Switcher, two profiles with exactly the same name cannot be told apart, so rename one.
